What is Marble?
Marble is a metamorphic calcareous rock. Originally limestone, marble is transformed into a physically different rock through high pressure and high temperature. Marble is harder than limestone but they are still chemically the same. Even though marble is found all over the world, the majority of marble in the U.S. comes from Italy. Marble come in many different unique colors and patterns. Some marble applications are: countertops, wall cladding, flooring, tile & fireplaces.
Are Marble Countertops safe in my kitchen?
We’re one of the few companies that does not discourage customers from getting marble countertops in their kitchen. However, we feel that proper education is required. The home owner must know what to expect before deciding if marble counters will fit the lifestyle.
Their is no substitute for the feel of a true natural stone marble countertop. Even though marble is a very durable stone, it can stain, it will scratch and it will etch. With proper sealing, the staining can be easily eliminated. Being that marble is soft, there’s is not much we can do about scratching. Since marble is a calcium based stone, anything acidic will cause it to etch. This means lemon juice, orange juice, hot sauce, etc.
We always recommend customers select a honed marble for kitchen applications. Honed marble countertops hide etch marks and scratches fairly well. If you use your countertop daily, soon the marble patina will make you forget about all the small little imperfections. One good thing about granite is that it can always be honed in place to clean it up of all scratches and etches.
